Rennes-le-Château is one of the world's most famous mysteries! This small village in the Razès region, perched on a rocky spur, is known worldwide. Its history dates back to the Middle Ages, but the man who drew all attention to it was a simple country priest, Bérenger Saunière. When he arrived at his new post in May 1885, the young cleric was dismayed: cracked walls, a ruined presbytery, an empty church... He had everything to rebuild, but no money or support. What would unfold next was entirely unexpected. Saunière, with his unique temperament, ambition, and work ethic, left a lasting mark on history.

The legend began quickly: while renovating parts of the church, the priest allegedly discovered parchments. What did they contain? No one knows. However, from that point on, Saunière, with the help of his loyal housekeeper Marie Denarnaud, spent his nights digging in the village cemetery. One grave in particular stood out with its strange, misspelled inscription. Could it hold a coded message? Did the priest decipher it? He frequently met with neighboring priests, including one scholar familiar with the area's rich history of Visigoths, Cathars, Templars, Blanche of Castile, and Mary Magdalene.

Then, suddenly, Saunière's circumstances changed. He began a series of grandiose construction projects. The source of his wealth remains a mystery, fueling the legend. He purchased land, restored the church, rebuilt the presbytery, and added a luxurious villa, hosted notable guests (including a mysterious Austrian of imperial lineage), erected a tower, and even imported rare books. He earned the nickname "Curé aux Millions" (the Millionaire Priest). Speculation arose that he might have found the tomb of Mary Magdalene, inspiring Dan Brown's famous "Da Vinci Code." Since the 1960s, treasure hunters have flocked to the area, eager to uncover secrets in the church, cemetery, and surroundings.
